授業の目的及び概要 This course will be conducted in English. The primary goal of this course is to understand the unity and diversity of Oceanic society, through studying cultural pluralism, political and economic issues, and diplomatic relationships, based on comparative perspective. In addition to such comprehensive understanding, students are expected to find interesting topic and issues related to Oceania region to present. Therefore, active participation will be required in this course.

この授業は英語のみで行われる。授業では、オセアニアを構成する国・地域を比較しながら、文化的な共通点と相違点、主要な政治・経済課題に関する協力関係と対立関係等を学ぶことで、オセアニアの一体性と多面性を理解することを目指す。このような俯瞰的な理解に加え、履修生のオセアニアへの関心を一層高めるため、履修生が関心を示す特定の国又は特定の課題に焦点をあてたり、履修生が主体性を持って授業にのぞむ能動的な学びを取り入れたりしながら、工夫をこらした内容とする。
履修条件 Active participation is requited in this course. Students are also expected to give a short presentation in the class. English communication skill is preferable, but not necessary to have excellent level.


科目の位置づけ(DPとの関連) This course corresponds to the following item of the DP;
1.To acquire appropriate knowledge and skills to understand and solve social issues under the globalization

この科目は、学位授与の方針(DP)に定める、学生が本学における学修と経験を通じて身につける知識や能力のうち、以下に該当する。1. グローバル化する現代社会の諸問題を理解し、理論と知識をもってその解決に向けて自ら考え、取り組む姿勢を身につけている。
学修の到達目標 Students who complete this course will have the improved ability to understand and discuss social and cultural issues of Oceania, based on comparative perspective. Also, students can present uniqueness and attractiveness of Oceania in their own words at the end of this course.
It is also hoped that students acquire a global mind and communication skill in English, which include the knowledge and capability to understand global issues.
授業の方法 The course explores the social and cultural issues of Oceania comprehensively.
Each class will have a specific topic within Oceania region, and students will be expected to understand the issue and have a discussion on each topic. Also, films and artworks related to Oceania will be introduced and screened in the class to understand their society.
At the later stage of the course, students are required to give a short presentation in the class regarding Oceania region or specific states. Therefore, students are requested to find an interesting topic to introduce other students.
授業外の学修(予習・復習等) Recommended books, materials, movies and other artworks will be introduced in this course. Students are expected to read and watch these materials to understand Oceania and related regional issues further.
テキスト・参考書 Handouts and materials will be provided in the class.
成績評価の基準・方法 40%: Attendance, writing a reaction paper, and participation in discussions and group projects;
60% Final exam
Students who are planning to take this course are expected to attend the introductory class.
この科目の履修にあたって This course will be conducted in English. It would be a very big challenge for some of the students. However, it also must be a great opportunity for all students to improve their both English and communication skill. Therefore, it is suitable for students who are interested in studying abroad and/or thinking of international career building or gaining global and comparative perspective in general.
Please do not hesitate to stop the class to raise a question.

英語で授業を行いますが、英語に自信がなくても大丈夫です。大切なのは、きれいに話すこと・理解することよりも「わかろうとする姿勢」です。ぜひ積極的にチャレンジしてみてくださいね!
