テーマ This course explores intercultural issues and cultural theory in contemporary globalising Japan. The primary goal of the class is to expose students to the study of culture through works taken from a  variety of disciplines, notably anthropology.

授業の目的及び概要 この授業は英語のみで行われる。授業では比較文化の基盤となる考え方、具体的には日本を含む世界の様々な文化のあり方や相互の影響関係について学修し、理解を深める。また、「比較という方法」、「学際性」、「総合性」の3つをテーマにセクションを設け、その枠の中で個別のテーマを論じていく。さらに、「自国文化と異文化」、「宗教」、「思想」、「文化交流」等の比較文化に関連するテーマを扱う際には、具体的な話題から普遍的な概念へと文化の問題を掘り下げる。
履修条件 This class will be conducted in English and students are expected to have the requisite language skills to participate in the following activities: active oral participation in class, the preparation of assignments in English, and the ability to write academic prose in English.
科目の位置づけ(DPとの関連) この科目は、学位授与の方針(DP)に定める、学生が本学における学修と経験を通じて身につける知識や能力のうち、以下に該当します。
1. グローバル化する現代社会の諸問題を理解し、理論と知識をもってその解決に向けて自ら考え、取り組む姿勢を身につけている。
2. 英語を中心として、国際コミュニケーションに必要なコミュニケーションのツールとスキルを活用する能力を修得している。
学修の到達目標 In this class, the students will develop a self-reflexive awareness of Japanese culture and its position in East Asia, while also recognising the impact of Westernisation and modernisation. In particular, the impact of American culture during the post-war period and the acculturation of American values in the context of Japan. This will require the development of analytic tools to promote meaningful dialogue placed within theoretic frameworks. Topics that will be explored include cultural variables, communication norms and their differences, the potential problems that can arise during intercultural interaction, and ways in which these problems can be addressed.  
授業の方法 Group discussions based on readings.
Individual presentations based on readings.
Ethnographic field work and the maintenance of a journal in which critical observations are to be recorded and checked: a minimum of three per week.

授業外の学修(予習・復習等) The class will require the student to prepare assigned readings for discussion in class. Failure to do so will result in the student being marked absent for the day. Written responses to a variety of questions on readings/field work are also to be prepared outside of class. There will be one field trip at some point during the semester to expose students to intercultural communication.

成績評価の基準・方法 15% attendance, participation: this includes homework completion and informed participation in class discussion.

この科目の履修にあたって The most challenging aspect of this class for the students will to be engage with critical thinking in English. To successfully to do so will require that they work in groups outside of class to analyse the readings in preparation of class discussion.
