授業の目的及び概要 The course introduces students to principles of effective written communication and critical reading. Stresses invention, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment, along with effective critiquing and collaborating.
The course will focus on the fundamentals of academic writing with the goal of sharpening  students’ critical reading and writing skills, with special attention to reasoning, formulating, and  developing arguments and explanations. Additionally it will emphasize the basics of rhetoric, the  course will give students practice theorizing and writing they will encounter in college and beyond. Attention will also be paid to mechanics of computer and program usage including extended usage of review, app dictionaries, online corpus and thesaurus, formatting styles, as well as developing and creating citations, reference lists and bibliographies and citing sources. The emphasis throughout is on creative thinking precisely expressed.
履修条件 More than 70% attendance is required.
Active participation in communicative activities.
Completion and submission of assignments.

This course is most suitable for students with intermediate upper-intermediate and advanced English skills, who wish to further develop their language skills and increase their functional ability to produce reports in English as well as to extend their knowledge of topics and issues.

To develop better understanding of issues from the perspective of English language usage.
To improve skills and become functional with the language and syntax used in the English academic reports.
授業の方法 Classes will be conducted entirely in English. In class activities will consist of completing group. pair and individual activities as well as participating in communicative discussion activities to better understand the topics and issues. Students will also work in pairs and small gourp to critique each other’s work.
授業外の学修(予習・復習等) Students should be prepared to actively participate. They will be able to review material covered in class by reading the online or printed reports and material supplied in class.

Printed and online material will be supplied.
成績評価の基準・方法 Participation in class activities                                 30%
Writing Assignments & Required Tasks  70%

Review & revision, re-editing, checking conventions, and peer review: In-class workshop.

第2回 Checking

Checking that mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling and capitalization align to conventions to preserve coherence and meaning of text and credibility of writer.

第3回 Incorporation of Data

Incorporating graphs and tables into a report: Styles and conventions, headings, clarity and functionality, referencing the data.

第4回 Critical Presentation

Introduction to Critical Presentation.

第5回 Collaborating, presenting

Collaborating, presenting information, selecting media, analyzing and accommodating audience, and incorporating technology.

第6回 Drafting

In-class drafting, practicing, continued collaboration, and gathering information.

第7回 Revision

Revision, editing, conventions, and peer review of Critical Presentation assignment.

第8回 Writing and revision

Writing and revision. May include individual conferences between Instructor and students.

第9回 Writing and revision
