授業の目的及び概要 The course introduces students to principles of effective written communication and critical reading. Stresses invention, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment, along with effective critiquing and collaborating.
The course will focus on the fundamentals of academic writing with the goal of sharpening  students’ critical reading and writing skills, with special attention to reasoning, formulating, and  developing arguments and explanations. Additionally it will emphasize the basics of rhetoric, the  course will give students practice theorizing and writing they will encounter in college and beyond. Attention will also be paid to mechanics of computer and program usage including extended usage of review, app dictionaries, online corpus and thesaurus, formatting styles, as well as developing and creating citations, reference lists and bibliographies and citing sources. The emphasis throughout is on creative thinking precisely expressed.
履修条件 More than 70% attendance is required.
Active participation in communicative activities.

This course is most suitable for students with intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced English skills, who wish to further develop their language skills and increase their functional ability to produce reports in English as well as to extend their knowledge of topics and issues.

To improve skills and become functional with the language and syntax used in the English academic reports.
授業の方法 Classes will be conducted entirely in English. In class activities will consist of completing group. pair and individual activities as well as participating in communicative discussion activities to better understand the topics and issues. Students will also work in pairs and small gourp to critique each other’s work.
授業外の学修(予習・復習等) Students should be prepared to actively participate. They will be able to review material covered in class by reading the online or printed reports and material supplied in class.

Evaluating Web resources. Creating & developing star balloon and paragraph planners.

Lessons on MLA documentation and citation; practice integrating basic paraphrases, quotes, and summarized ideas, and avoiding plagiarism.

Preliminary writing: proposal, outline, or other development exercises.

Revision, editing, conventions, and peer review: In-class workshop.

Observing sufficient mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling and capitalization conventions to preserve coherence and meaning of text and credibility of writer.
